Task 1
Structure in nature
My Response
To respond to Myoung Ho Lee's work we went into Coldfall Woods to try and replicate his images. We took large pieces of white card out with us to act as a canvas and took close up and wide angle photos of particular branches, bushes or plants. We did this so that the difference between the natural environment was completely separated, by closely taking pictures against the white card, and taking wider angled photos where the white card is seen against the environment. I then selected 4 images and edited them on photoshop using auto-contrast, auto-tone and auto-colour. Editing the levels of contrast and brightness and cropping my images to enhance the colours and contrast of the image.
The images i produced in the style of Myoung Ho Lee did not seem to be on the white background but slightly infront. If i had used card instead of paper i would have been able to get the subject closer to the background.

Myoung Ho Lee
Myoung Ho Lee's photographs Solitary Trees framed against white canvas backdrops in the middle of natural landscapes.
Myoung Ho Lee, a young artist from South Korea, has produced an elaborate series of photographs that pose some unusual questions about representation, reality, art, environment and seeing.
Simple in concept, complex in execution, he makes us look at a tree and its structure in its natural surroundings, but separates the tree artificially from nature by presenting it on an immense white ground, as one would see a painting or photograph on a billboard.
His works are largely composed by following four procedures:
1. Selection of The Subject
2. Separation of The Subject (meta-subject)
3. Photographing
4. Confirmation of The Separation
The object becomes a ‘separated object’, an ‘ambiguous subject’ and a ‘meta-subject’.

Task 2
Field Works
My Response
To try and replicate Sanna Kannisto's work I photographed a variety of different flowers against a white background. Like Kannisto's images, I used a retort clamp and stand to hold the flowers in place. I then photographed them in a number of different angles, experimenting with the different angles and how close up the images were taken. I then selected 3 of my best images and edited them on photoshop, changing the contrast, tone and brightness of the images until they appeared more vibrant and focused and aimed to make the background more white to further enhance the colours, like Sanna Kannisto's work.
On the centre image i particularly like the irregular shape of the leaves and the way in which they draw your eye down the image away from the magenta rose. If i had had more time i would have used more lighting to try and eliminate the shadows.
Field Works
ARTIST
Sanna kannisto
Sanna Kannisto is a Finnish artist who explores the way in which we approach nature in art and science through her photography. She does this by using scientific apparatus in her work, e.g. retort stands, clamps etc, to reveal the science aspect of her work, as well as using plants, leaves and flowers to represent nature. As soon as the natural object is removed from its environment, we can really focus and understand that piece of nature as a single unit and notice specific characteristics that we wouldn't normally, in an everyday environment. The use of the white backdrop in the 'field studio' further emphasises this as a greater contrast is seen. Kannisto collects a variety of species' in a great range of ways, then exploring and archiving them.

Simon Phipps is a fine art photographer operating in the UK and has captured a wide variety of subjects. While photographing Brutalist architecture is nothing new, Mr. Phipps' approach and execution is something very unique.
Monocrome
My Response
To develop the idea of brutalism I simplified the images down to the average colour of each section. This gives it a solid block like structure and makes the images more abstract.
Evaluation: by simplifying my images I focus the attention to the shape and structure of the building in it's simplest form. This could be improved by darkening the background to make the buildings look as if they are coming out of the shadows and into the light.
This Development links to the work of Thomas Anthony as both my response and his simplify the subject, although his work has more of an abstract feel and mine shows more structure.

Radical Eye Exhibition
The Radical Eye is an exhibition from the Sir Elton John collection, it displays photograph from the classic modernist period of the 1920s-1950s. Over the last 25 years Sir Elton John has put a collection together including portraits of Man Ray, Picasso, Matisse and Breton and has over 70 artists and nearly 150 rare vintage prints on show. The exhibition consists entirely of rare vintage prints, all created by the artists themselves, the quality and depth of the collection allows the exhibition to tell the story of modernist photography in this way for the first time in the UK. Featuring portraits of great cultural figures of the 20th century, including Georgia O’Keeffe by Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Weston by Tina Modotti, Jean Cocteau by Berenice Abbott and Igor Stravinsky by Edward Weston, the exhibition gives insight into the relationships and inner circles of the avant-garde. Ground-breaking experimentation is seen both in the darkroom and on the surface of the print, such as Herbert Bayer’s photomontage and Maurice Tabard’s solarisation, examine how artists pushed the accepted conventions of portraiture.
Task 4
Structure of the body

ARTIST
Gunther Von Hagens
Gunther Von Hagens is a German anatomist who invented the technique for preserving biological tissue specimens called plastination. "The anatomist alone is assigned a specific role-he is forced in his daily work to reject the taboos and convictions that people have about death and the dead. I myself am not controversial, but my exhibitions are, because I am asking viewers to transcend their fundamental beliefs and convictions about our joint and inescapable fate."
Strand 1
Mirror city
My Response
For this strand I take a city landscape and reflect it below and line it up. This shows a mirror view of the structure of the city and how it can be manipulated to create artificial structure. The subjects in the middle of the image draws your attention and this creates a sense of expanse and claustrophobia.
Evaluation: if I had more time to develop these images I would of made them slightly lighter to make every detail clear in the image. Furthermore if I was to take more images I would take them of more high rise buildings to create more space in the middle of the image and the focus is on more of the structure than he distorted middle.
Process on Photoshop

Michael Shainblum
"When I first started Mirror City, I wanted to create a video that was completely out of the norm. I wanted to showcase something unique and artistic, which takes Timelapse photography into a more abstract direction. Mirror City is a visual story through some of the great American cities: Chicago, San Francisco, San Diego, Las Vegas and Los Angeles." - Michael Shainblum

Development 2
My Response
Development 3
My Response
I played with the idea of Mirrored City bending the image to create a world that is collapsing on top of the other. I tried to create movement and a feeling of chaos and claustrophobia. Pushing structures to their limits.
Development 4
My Response
Continuing on the theme Mirrored City, in this strand i developed my idea of structure to create a swirling world. The clouds round the outside give the impression of spinnig.
Strand 2
My Response
This strand links to structure as it shows the internal structure of the body and shows the complexity of the blood vessels in the body.
For the above images I showed the blood vessels, which would normally be underneath the skin, on top of the image. The red blood vessels are meant to signify the veins within the body and the blue are the arteries.

Strand 3
My Response
In this strand I take apart different types of buildings to show how the buildings fit together. The walls of the buildings are separated from each other to show the structure of the buildings.
To create this image i had to remove the sides of the pillar and create the scenery behind them from scratch. This involved the selection tool, copy and paste and the clone stamp tool. This process took 3-4 hrs to complete. To improve this image i would create a roof for the pillar. I would also have made the sides 3D which would have made them look more realistic.
