Abstraction in Man-made and Nature
The purpose of this section is to find abstraction in buildings and man made objects and do the same in nature. I will create abstract images from normal images of buildings with photoshop and will also capture parts of buildings to create an abstract look without the use of photoshop.
Abstraction Experementation
1st edits
2st edits
3rd edits
For this task I was experimenting with photoshop to distort the images in different ways. For the first edits I pasted the same image over each other to create different layers then lightened them so they shined through each other.
For the second edits I used shapes to distort and warp the Images. For the first one the shape used was the 3d ring. For the second one the shape used was the 3d hat. Finally for the third one the shape used was the 3d cone.

Open the Image into Photoshop. Select the whole Image, then copy and paste it so you now have two identical layers.
|
Next go to the "Opacity" on the right of the screen and change the opacity of layer 1 to 50%.
|
Then, select layer 1, and press "cmd t" "ctrl t" and use the arrows to move the layer 25 spaces to the left.
|
Save the image as a jpeg. Then every time you save the image move 2 spaces to the right. After you do this 25 times you should be 25 spaces to the right.
Press "file, scripts, load files into stack, select all 25 saved images and open them. Make sure you reduce the size to fit onto Weebly.
Select them all at the bottom of the screen and press the button with four lines and copy frames.
Next press the four line button again and paste the frames. Select paste after selection and press ok.
|
Select the images you just pasted and press the four line button and select reverse frames.
|
Finally press"file, save for web and devices" then save it as a gif.

Reflection
I feel that the gif really captured a moving abstract piece of work with just a millisecond of the image in focus and the rest of the time the image is distorted.
Nature in the man made world
In this task I photographed vegitation which is breaking out of manmade objects such as houses, bricks, pavements and roads. I did this because in this unit I will be focusing on the conflict between man and nature and the abstractions in them.
Abstraction in buildings
In my first set of images I looked for geometric shapes within buildings. This was to show the abstract shapes within the buildings which I also used later in projections and other developments. I aimed to photograph the corner of the buildings as well as other shapes I could find.
Average
Reflection
For this task I took a picture of a brutalist building and edited it in photoshop to create an abstract effect. This is done by selecting shapes in the image on photoshop and going to filter, blur and then press average. I feel that it leaves a very abstract look and feel that I created them very effectively.
New River Village
In this task I captured the corners of the buildings in New River Village. I decided to play with the composure of the images to create an enigma of what the rest of the building looks like in the photographs. This was done by leaving out most of the building and leaving negative space.
Mirror City
ARTIST
Michael Shainblum
"When I first started Mirror City, I wanted to create a video that was completely out of the norm. I wanted to showcase something unique and artistic, which takes Timelapse photography into a more abstract direction. Mirror City is a visual story through some of the great American cities: Chicago, San Francisco, San Diego, Las Vegas and Los Angeles." - Michael Shainblum
Development 1
My Response
Evaluation: if I had more time to develop these images I would of made them slightly lighter to make every detail clear in the image. Furthermore if I was to take more images I would take them of more high rise buildings to create more space in the middle of the image and the focus is on more of the structure than the distorted middle.
Process on photoshop
For this task I created images of urban environments to look like they're reflecting the landscape. The purpose of this task was to create an abstract view of man made cities.
Development 2
Development 3
For this development I made the image look like the world is folding in on itself and isn't natural.
Development 4
Reflection
I played with the idea of Mirrored City bending the image to create a world that is collapsing on top of the other. I tried to create movement and a feeling of chaos and claustrophobia. Pushing structures to their limits.
Development 5
Reflection
Continuing on the theme Mirrored City, in this strand i developed my idea of structure to create a swirling world. The clouds round the outside give the impression of spinning. This continues with the theme of mirror city as everything becomes a full cycle and you will always get back to the start when you look around it.
Acetate Projections
Development 1
The images I took for this task weren't abstract so I decided to print them onto accetate to distort them
for this task i printed 4 images onto acetate and then used a light projector to project them onto a white backdrop. Next I over layered the images to create an abstract effect, I also folded and flipped them to make them more abstract. The aim was to create the images so that they looked like they were layered and folding in on themselves such as the examples below.
Development 2
Colour
After taking the images above I experimented with changing the colours in photoshop to create shapes of colour on top of the image.
Nature
Development 3
Nature Vs Man
Development 4
In this task I captured the contrast between man made structures and nature. I did this by layering acetates of nature and man made structures to show a conflicting contrast between lots of negative space in nature and the man made structures which fill the screen.
Development 5
The next thing I did was use these images and turn them into threshold to create a simplified version of them to project images onto them.
The aim of this task was to create depth and a dynamic landscape in front of the images being projected.
Development 6
Obstructions
Development 7
WWW
I had a good use of colour.
EBI:
this task could be improved if the objects had some variety and also didn't stay in the same place for every shot. furthermore for the next task I will have images as obstacles instead of just cardboard.

Deconstructing (In Photoshop)

My Response
Process
Deconstructing shapes in buildings (Physically)
For this task I printed an image of the Tate modern and stuck it onto cardboard. next I cut out the shapes in the building and then removed the image from the cardboard so i had the outline of the building. Then I printed abstract shapes from Kings Cross station on to acetate and projected them onto the cardboard to create abstract shapes onto abstract shapes on cardboard and photographed it.
Final pieces
For my final pieces I created physical projections to be displayed on my exhibition.
